Many people are mistaken with the idea that communication is only verbal in nature, when in reality the concept of it is quite vast. It is quite explicable that different situations call for different modes of communication. No matter what form of communication is being used; they each highlight something about us and what we are trying to say.

As human beings, we each possess some degree of intellectual capabilities, which allow us to identify the different forms of communication.

However, one or another method is being used at all times.

Verbal Communication

Also known as oral communication, verbal communication is one of the primary and most preferred way people choose to communicate with one another.

It allows speedy responses and instantaneous feedback.

Most people feel that verbal communication is the easiest way to convey their message to others, without much effort and complexity. Face to face interaction allows immediate correction as well as gives the other correspondent a chance to repeat the former statements.

However, it is important to note that interpreting one’s statements can be a very tricky job when the message is being conveyed to a multitude of people.

The likelihood of distorted messages increases here.

Non-Verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication mainly refers to a whole array of hand and body movements, sign language, facial expressions, and lots more.

Usually, people use non-verbal communication to support their verbal discussions and arguments, partly because the message can be better displayed as well as conveyed.

We all have gone through or seen situations where there is a need to emphasize on certain words or statements; a need to use our hands, legs, eyes, lips, eyebrows, and everything else to display an act, and the like.

The use of non-verbal communication can be controversial in some instances, because various signs and language can be comprehended differently from individual to individual and place to place.

Formal Communication

The need for formal communication has been significant all this time, and it especially takes place in an organization made up of tons of people working in a pyramidal structure.

The top to bottom formal communication relates to the top management passing down commands and instructions to lower managers. Contrariwise, people at the lower level are required to follow these instructions, perform their duties, and to inform the top level managers about the progress and results.

This sort of communication can also take place between people belonging to different departments. The former is termed as vertical communication while the latter is termed as horizontal communication.

Informal Communcation

Informal communication is the opposite of formal communication, where workers of an organization interact with one another on topics which are unrelated to business issues.

They may gather up for lunch or coffee, or outside the business premises for a quick chat.

In other words, informal communication can be termed as grapevine. This refers to gossips and rumors which employees share amongst themselves, and at times can be very important for workers to get hold of valuable information.

However, it can also be unreliable and misleading.

Written Communication

Putting the words into text or print form is what written communication is all about.

Written communication is preferred at times when the matter is extremely important, and can be saved for later use. In addition, it allows us to review the information more than once, along with making the necessary alterations.

Written communication usually requires a lot of proofreading, as chances of errors can be greater here.

Memos, letters, emails, fax, and proposals are commonly applied methods of written communication.

Which One Is The Best?

Mastering one form of communication is not the key to success.

Communication is a must in all phases of life, and it is one of the top ranked skills which anyone can possess.

Thus, all the modes of communication play an equally important role in our lives, and none of them must be overlooked.
